Preparing for a new school year after divorce

Summer is almost over, and for many Florida parents, this year's back to school routine will be a bit different from those of the past. For parents who have gone through a divorce, the well-being of their children is a top priority. For many, ensuring the well-being of their children means making the transitions into new school years with altered living arrangements as easy as possible.

One of the most important things that divorced parents can do to ease this time of transition for their children is to make use of the resources that are available to them. This means taking the time to schedule a meeting with each child's teacher to discuss the changes in the family structure. Bringing the teacher into the loop ensures that he or she is aware that the student may encounter difficulties during the period of adjustment.

Many schools also have resources available specifically for children of divorce. School counselors are on hand if a child needs to open up about his or her response to the divorce. Some schools even have support groups where children can meet other students who are going through similar experiences in their own families.

Just as no two Florida families are exactly alike, no two children will have the exact same experience concerning their parents' divorces. This is why it is so important to build a support team to help a child through this difficult time. As the school year begins, including a child's teacher in the post-divorce support network can make a world of difference in the daily life of the child.
