Florida man facing multiple felony charges detained by SWAT

On Aug. 28, a man was taken into custody for several outstanding felony warrants. Reports indicate that various law enforcement entities, including SWAT, were involved in the man's detention after a tip was provided to area police. The man is being held without bond on multiple felony charges.

Felony warrants in various cities were issued for the man, including a warrant for attempted murder. The man allegedly tried to murder the ex-husband of his former girlfriend in September 2013. In that case, no one was injured, although police claim the man opened fire as he drove by the ex-husband's home.

When police received the tip about the man's presence in Miami, a SWAT team was sent to the location. Authorities established a perimeter in the area and used armored trucks as well as a K-9 unit to patrol. The man was detected by scent and bitten by a K-9 dog before being taken into custody. The bite wounds were treated by paramedics prior to the man being transported to the hospital. A woman in his vehicle was also taken into custody. Reports do not detail all of the felony charges the man faces, and they did not indicate whether the woman will also be facing charges.

Felony charges may result in severe penalties such as a long prison sentence, hefty fines and probation. Individuals accused of a crime could consult with a criminal defense lawyer to discuss the possibility of having the charges dismissed or reduced. Under some circumstances, a lawyer could challenge the credibility of officers' techniques for gathering evidence or uncover if police did not follow proper protocol and infringed upon a defendant's rights. It is important to remember that charges do not imply guilt.
