DUI suspected in July crash that resulted in Florida man's death

The Florida Highway Patrol has reported that a 60-year-old Gulf Breeze man died Aug. 17 as the result of a July car accident that might have been caused by impaired driving. According to officials, he was driving his vehicle in Gulf Breeze July 7 when a vehicle driven by a 19-year-old man crossed over several lanes of traffic, cleared a concrete barrier and struck the man's vehicle head-on.

The driver of the Jeep suffered serious injuries and was in critical care prior to his death. He was originally from Pensacola and earned his living as a surveyor, according to reports. The 19-year-old driver was also seriously injured, and an 18-year-old passenger in his vehicle suffered minor injuries.

The FHP has said they believe the accident may have been the result of the 19-year-old man driving under the influence. A homicide division of the FHP is continuing its investigation of the accident. According to a spokesperson, charges are likely to be filed. However, neither the nature of the charges nor a time schedule for filing them were given due to the fact that the investigation is still ongoing.

Being convicted of a DUI charge in Florida can affect a person's life for a long time to come. Penalties often include monetary fines and time spent in jail, and penalties become even more severe when a person has been convicted multiple times. Convictions stay on a person's record and can affect such things as future employment. Anyone facing a DUI charge may want to consult with a defense attorney who could work to challenge the evidence in an effort to get the charges lowered or dismissed. Alternatively, the attorney may be able to negotiate a plea deal that could result in a reduction of the charges or alternative sentencing, which could minimize the impact of a conviction on a person's livelihood and reputation.
