Alleged fight leads to misdemeanor charge

A Florida man has been charged with a misdemeanor following an altercation. According to police, the 34-year-old man banged on the door to an apartment. The door to the apartment was apparently opened by a minor and the man barged into the home. Once in the home, police claim that the man attacked another man that was sleeping on the couch by punching him.

The man who was attacked ran into the apartment's bathroom and locked himself in. Police say that then the minor who opened the door alerted his father, who was also in the apartment. The child's father allegedly stopped any further attack.

Following the incident, the man was charged with misdemeanor battery. He is due in court in December.

Misdemeanor charges can be very serious. People may think that since the potential punishments are less severe than some felony charges that they shouldn't be treated carefully. However, people could end up in jail for a year without the right criminal defense strategy. People may also be sentenced to large fines, community service, probation or other penalties. All of these penalties can be distributive to a person's life. People may find that these charges interfere with their family time, or with their professional lives -- which could lead to other social consequences.

To prevent some of these consequences, people need to prepare a criminal defense -- even for misdemeanor charges. Whether the charges is a traffic violation, shoplifting charge or a misdemeanor charge for a physical altercation, criminal defenses may be available. In some cases, prosecutors may even be willing to reduce the charges or penalties further in exchange for a person's cooperation.
