Florida police focus on domestic violence

Most people love their families. At this time of year, it is easy for the stress of the holidays to cause tension and disagreements, but the love is still there. In some situations, these disagreements snowball into physical altercations. While this is unfortunate, it is a mistake that can happen to anyone. Often times, domestic violence charges can result following a fight of this magnitude.

Florida officials take domestic violence very seriously. Charges for domestic violence can have long-lasting effects including prison time, probation and protective orders. Following domestic violence charges, people may be restricted from seeing their loved ones including their children and may be forced to stay away from their homes -- which can be particularly difficult this time of year.

Recently sheriff officers from across Florida have taken a greater interest in domestic violence cases. The Florida Sheriffs Task Force has recently ended a month long operation targeting domestic violence. Under the operation -- called Operation Safe Families -- police arrested many people on domestic violence charges. The FSTF also worked to track down people who had previously been arrested for domestic violence but had yet to face criminal proceedings.

During Operation Safe Family, more than 5,000 people in 33 counties across Florida were arrested. Of these arrests, 2,587 people were arrested for domestic violence charges.

Those facing charges following this operation should know that they have the right to share their side of the story in a court of law. Domestic violence cases are often difficult and the truth is not easily attainable -- especially in he-said, she-said situations. However, with the right criminal defense people can avoid penalties and move forward with their lives.
