Judge: five life sentences for pimp

Sex crimes are among the most aggressively prosecuted offenses in the penal system. Those who stand accused of sex crimes face long prison terms, steep fines and lifelong sex offender registry requirements. An effective sex crimes defense is important when facing this type of charge and can often mean the difference between exoneration and loss of liberty as well as other negative outcomes.

Sex crimes involving children and teens tend to be prosecuted and punished with fervor, as one 49-year-old Fort Lauderdale man found out recently, when a federal judge sentenced him to five life sentences in prison for sex trafficking of minors. The man was found guilty by a jury in October for pimping out girls between the ages of 12 and 16 from his home. He is appealing his conviction and claims that the girls are lying about his actions.

He reportedly described himself as a "father figure," who was trying to help young girls quit prostitution.

Police say that in addition to selling the young girls for sex, the man had sex with some of them himself. Police also allege that he gave drugs to some of the girls. Several of them testified against him during his trial.

With the hard stance that many jurisdictions are now placing on those who are charged with sex crimes, those who are hit with allegations of this nature need to be advised of their legal right to a fair defense. False accusations can not only damage the accused person's personal life and professional standing, but they can also cause irreparable damage to his or her reputation.
